The Compass

When you’re starting out in the music or audio industry, the hardest part isn’t learning the technical stuff. You can get that from a thousand tutorials. The hardest part is figuring out who you are in this industry — and how you’re going to survive it without losing yourself.

That’s where the compass comes in.

I call it the compass because it’s what you return to when you’re lost. It doesn’t point you to trends, hype, or what everyone else is doing. It points you back to your own values.

Your code is the thing that says: This is who I am. This is how I operate. This is where I’m headed.

Here’s what mine looks like after 20+ years of making records:

  • Every Song Is an Island. Every track that comes across my desk deserves the same level of attention and respect. The people who hire me deserve my very best.

  • Be Transparent. No smoke and mirrors. I explain what I’m doing so artists feel empowered, not dependent.

  • Protect the Artist’s Vision. I’m not here to make the song mine. I’m here to elevate theirs.

  • Stay Curious. Never assume I know everything. Try new tools, new approaches, new sounds.

  • Value Time. Show up prepared, finish on deadline, never waste a session.

  • No Ego in the Room. The artist and the song always come first.

  • Give Back. Share knowledge, mentor others, amplify good people doing good work.

  • Protect My Health. If I burn out, I can’t do my best work.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I stand for?

  • What won’t I compromise on?

  • How do I treat myself, my collaborators, and the art I make?

Write it down. Keep it short. Post it where you see it every day.

The truth is, this line of work will test you. It’ll tempt you to take shortcuts, copy bad habits, or compromise your values to get ahead. Without a code, you’ll drift into someone else’s which may not have your best interests in mind.

The compass is you, uniquely yours. Something you can come back to every day. The framework to do your best work
